Practical guide
SMART is a diagnostic language. Learn the useful phrases.
You do not need to memorize every attribute. You need to know which values suggest media damage, connection trouble, heat, wear or age.
Media-health signals
Reallocated, pending and uncorrectable sectors often matter because they describe areas the drive cannot trust. Trends are more important than a single isolated number.
Connection signals
CRC and communication errors can point to cables, ports, enclosures or controller issues. Replacing a cable is cheaper than misdiagnosing the drive.
Age and workload signals
Power-on hours, start-stop counts and write totals provide context. A heavily used drive deserves stricter trust decisions.
Vendor-specific signals
Some attributes are model-specific. Use the tool interpretation and documentation rather than treating every raw number as universal.
